I’m about to actually spend money on some upgrades to my Netflix/iTunes Windows XP machine. I want to max my ram, get a supported os and an SSD for that new OS to live on.
Used to be I’d hit up Newegg but that site appears to be a dumpster fire. I don’t know what happened to that.
I’d be happy to purchase a barebones desktop with an SSD and a current OS and a compact case.

I’m thinking this is probably the cheapest way into what I want.

I’ve used JNCS and AVADirect as my goto. JNCS built 2 of my machines to my specs and Ava built one. I got parts from Ava a few times.

Dag yo. Those are some spendy computers.
This machine just sits next to my TV and plays Netflix and updates my iPod and Kindle.

Newegg, TigerDirect and Amazon are where I’ve bought 90% of my build components, though it’s been a couple years since I made a purchase at Newegg.
As for the SSD, keep an eye on KinjaDeals, they usually have a pretty good sale on SSDs listed every week or two.
Edit:
PCPartpicker
might work as well, polls a number of electronics retailers and lists components by price from multiple vendors.

If it’s for a Netflix machine, just put a recent version of Linux on it like Linux Mint or Ubuntu...saves you $120 of buying a copy of Win10 and it will work just fine and act almost the same as Windows (in Mint’s case), plus a lot of the programs you are used to with Windows are on it or equally good equivalents! (Although the iPod and Kindle might be an issue as Apple has no Linux versions of their software that I know of...)
NCIX.com is another option for parts btw.

Consider it a Porsche Configurator. You can get base models or you can get HAL-9000

I buy from Microcenter, sure its a little more expensive, but the same day pick up is nice.

Windows XP?? What is your budget?
I devote a Dell laptop to video streaming, 1080p.
You might consider something like this:
256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM and 1080p HDMI display.

Dell is a good way to go. I’d suggest you hold out for Core i7, 8 GB RAM and stick with Windows 7 Pro. There are Oppos who might have different opinions there, but I have deployed many used Dell computers and have never gone wrong with them.

Sounds like you need an Apple TV, unless there’s something else you didn’t mention you use it for.

Ok, but there are other options. It doesn’t make sense to power a desktop PC all year to stream TV and music.

I actually started looking this morning for something that would just do media streaming simple web browsing. I’m trying to decide between these two kits.

I’ve already got a 500gb ssd I can use, so I’d just need ram putting total cost of about 450. with 8gb of ddr4. Was going to try out ubuntu instead of windows.

I ditched Newegg in favor of Amazon after receiving several DOA components and, essentially, being told to suck it. Amazon generally has better pricing, shipping, and returns. That said, their search can be a pain, so I’ll usually find the stuff on Newegg and then order it via Amazon. Not a surefire way as prices can vary but...

People come to me looking for a laptop and that’s what I get for them, exactly. Then I resell it to them for $350 after I spend an hour or two sprucing it up with antivirus and so on. It’s a very robust, professional-grade laptop with a good display. I’m not a fan of Windows 10, personally, and if I bought this lappy, I’d re-image it with Win 7 Pro.
This one has its share of scratches and dings, but doesn’t look like it’s been dropped or thrown out a car window or anything like that.
I would feel comfortable recommending this laptop at this price. You might contact the seller and ask that he includes a genuine Dell 120-watt charger.

Never heard of them. They don’t look like what I want though. I went with the intel nuc.

Newegg and Amazon.
If you have a Microcenter brick and mortar near by, they are often the cheapest place to get CPUs, but doesn’t sound like you are touching the CPU.

I haven’t had any trouble with Newegg lately...
I’ve been playing around with parts for a little mini PC that I’m not actually going to buy. Have you heard of M.2 SSDs? They’re basically the size of a RAM stick that goes on your motherboard so you just need 1 traditional HDD for storage. Here’s a quick HTPC setup I cooked up for you, with an AMD APU for integrated graphics and not worries about that huge Intel vulnerability that was just discovered.
Case
- $41.20
Mobo
- $114.99 (has built-in wifi & bluetooth)
APU
- $69.99
RAM
- $87.99
M.2 SSD
- $59.99
Storage HDD
- $53.99
Total - $428.15
You can maybe play around more to drive the price down if desired.
